Sachin Tendulkar's coach Ramakant Achrekar dies
Vetaran Indian cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday. Apart from coaching legendary Sachin Tendulkar in his early days, Achrekar had trained guys like Ajit Agarkar, Vinod Kambli and Pravin Amre.
Ramakant Vithal Achrekar was born in 1932. Achrekar's playing career was not as distinguished as his coaching career. He started playing cricket in 1943.
In 1990, Achrekar received the prestigious Dronacharya award for his services to cricket coaching. In 2010, he was conferred with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour in India. As a player, Achrekar played just one first-class match and was also a selector for Mumbai for a brief period.
He founded Kamath Memorial Cricket Club at Shivaji Park. He had coached & nurtured numerous cricketers, which includes the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ajit Agarkar, Chandrakant Pandit, Vinod Kambli & Pravin Amre. He had devoted himself in coaching, to uplift the Indian cricket standards. The club is currently run by his daughter Kalpana Murkar and son-in-law Deepak Murkar.
